Integrating Equine Assisted Psychotherapy/Learning and nature-based opportunities when working with Autistic children and young people

Online Education Series

Overview

This training has been developed with input directly from Autistic advocates to provide both education about Autism and also insight into the lived experience of Autistic people, to further develop participants capacity for Autistic and neurodiversity affirming practice.

This speciality training is for practitioners working with/ interested in working with Autistic children and young people, specifically in the space of providing Equine Assisted Therapy and Learning and/or Nature-based supports.

We will enhance the learning experience by coming together each week to share case examples in a discussion group that is guided by Nadine Delaney, AMHSW, experienced Equine Assisted Psychotherapist and Supervisor, with many years of experience in supporting Autistic people and Diana Waters, Accredited Counsellor and Equine Assisted Psychotherapist, who has lived experiences of being Autistic.

Apply an Autistic-affirming approach to your Therapy/learning space, your practice’s policies and procedures, session planning and delivery, Therapeutic / learning goals and outcome measures.

Deliver an Autistic affirming approach, using the ‘Square Model’ (Mitchelson and Clarke, 2022) to a range of equine and nature-based experiences with autistic clients.

Understand the opportunities for engaging music, play, creativity, animals and nature into sessions with children and young people, to address their executive function, communication, sensory and interoceptive needs.

Demonstrate an internalised autistic affirming mindset through a series of opportunities for self-reflection and clinical awareness to effective support Autistic clients.

Who will benefit:

This educational series will be targeted at practitioners working with, or interested in working with Autistic children and young people, specifically in the space of providing Equine Assisted Therapy and Learning and/or Nature-based supports.

How it is different to other ‘training’:

We honour the importance of having Autistic people at the forefront of the delivery of information around Autism; leading us to deepen our understanding of our Autistic clients and internalise a neuroaffirming approach so we can better engage in inclusive and empowering practices.

The educational information in this series is delivered by Autistic people via a series of consultation type interviews. The ‘interviewees’ are all Autistic and have either engaged in Equine/Animal Assisted Therapy themselves or specialise in supporting autistic children and their families. They generously offer their insight, expertise and lived- experience.

The series includes interviews with the following people

Testimonials from previous attendees:

“I truly enjoyed the Education Series, got such a great deal out of it.  I also appreciate being able to get back into the resources at some stage as I know I will pick up more when I get a chance to rewatch the interviews, so that will be super helpful.

The added benefit to this type of learning is the connections, being able to gain deeper insight and knowledge from allowing myself to see through the lens of others.

The interviewees were a fantastic choice, gave us a wide scope of views etc and again I TRULY loved having your input Diana, thank you immensely, I know you always stated it was just one view and did not represent other Autistic people, however it was fantastic to have you.”

Nadine, the gift of these trainings and your generosity at sharing your expertise and knowledge is so valuable and I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity, ….. keep ’em coming.”

Suzanne,  EAP VIC Australia

“ Thank you very much for the opportunity to participate in your training. While I was not the target audience (not being a horsey person 😊). I thought my feedback my still be useful. I loooved the videos! So important to have autistic voices in training.”

Linda, Clinical Psychologist, NSW, Australia.

“ I enjoyed most the in-depth interviews with all of your interviewees. I learnt a lot from your well thought out questions… I learnt so much from this course. I now have a much better understanding of Autism that just I did not have before. I feel I can now assist and understand my clients much better and be more curious when certain situations arise. Thank you Nadine the series has made a big difference in my understanding of Autism.”

Jenny, EAL, NSW Australia

“I’ve gained so much from participating in the Education series and  I reckon these skills will be benefit me greatly and ultimately all clients with whom I engage, I am very grateful for this opportunity, thanks Nadine. ”

Warren, EAL QLD Australia

“Thanks Nadine and Diana. This learning is really challenging me. This is where growth occurs. What a great opportunity you have provided.”

Linda, EAP QLD. Australia

“ I feel more confident in having conversations with parents, particularly in facilitating a deeper understanding of the unique profile of each Autistic child/ young person specifically regarding their challenges and resources and parent/ carer role in facilitating a safe and compassionate home environment. I feel better equipped at supporting Autistic clients to better understand and experiment with identifying resourcing for themselves and validating their experience of the world. I have grown in my understanding of how to collaboratively develop treatment goals that align with my practice philosophies that are affirming and targeted to overcoming the challenges as the client defines them rather than what others identify as being problematic.

I feel so much more confident working with Autistic people through gaining a clearer understanding of the typical traits that are common among the Autistic population whilst appreciating the uniqueness of each individual presentation and experience.

I found immense benefit in participating in this training and am much more confident working with Autistic clients  - deep gratitude to Nadine and Diana and especially the generous and interviewees for openly sharing their amazing and enlightening stories.”

I’m an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker in private practice. I’m also an EPI Certified Equine Assisted Psychotherapy practitioner and Supervisor and EMDR practitioner.

You can learn more about me at : www.huntervalleychildrenstherapies.com/the-team.

I primarily work alongside children and young people with a large proportion of my clients being Autistic/ neurodivergent.

I also provide clinical supervision and consultation for other practitioners - social workers, psychologists, counsellors, other Mental Health practitioners and Equine Assisted Learning practitioners.

I live with ADHD and I’m enjoying the journey of discovery about myself and how my brain works.

Diana Waters

Diana is my co-pilot for this series. She is Autistic and an Accredited Counsellor and Certified Equine Assisted Psychotherapy practitioner.

You can learn more about Diana and her private practice, Central Coast Equine Assisted Psychotherapy at www.cceap.com.au (EAP) and www.responsiveequine.com.au (Riding coaching)

“I was a high school Chemistry teacher and a part time qualified riding instructor, before becoming a full-time mother of 2 children. I then created my own business as a full-time riding coach, also volunteering as an Ethics teacher in my local primary school.

I have always shared a deep connection with horses and through experiencing the richness of support that they have offered through difficult times, became interested in sharing this with others. Beginning to explore this and integrate the psychological support offered by horses into my work as a riding coach, I decided to pursue this further and discovered the Equine Psychotherapy Institute (EPI). EPI training is world class, and practitioners experience the work first hand and move through deep personal work as a part of the process. I am now a certified EAP practitioner with the EPI and a registered counsellor with the ACA.

I am passionate about empowering people to discover their own unique path to fulfilment. I believe the space and support offered by horses, and the gentle affirming approach of Gestalt therapy are the ideal combination.

I am Autistic and have a strong background  in neurodiversity and I am a neurodiversity-affirming therapist. I also specialise in working with women who have experienced domestic abuse.”
